Comparison of the methane oxidation rate in four media Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Rose,Juliana Lundgren; Mahler,Cláudio Fernando; Izzo,Ronaldo Luis dos Santos.
Landfill gas emissions are one of the main sources of anthropogenic methane (CH4), a major greenhouse gas. In this paper, an economically attractive alternative to minimize greenhouse gas emissions from municipal solid waste landfills was sought. This alternative consists in special biofilters as landfill covers with oxidative capacity in the presence of CH4. To improve the quality/cost ratio of the project, compost was chosen as one of the cover substrates and soil (Typic red yellow-silt-clay Podzolic) as the other. The performance of four substrates was studied in laboratory experiments: municipal solid waste (MSW) compost, soil, and two soil-compost at different proportions. This study aimed to evaluate the suitability and environmental compatibility as...

Denitrification coupled with methane anoxic oxidation and microbial community involved identification BABT
Cuba,Renata Medici Frayne; Duarte,Iolanda Cristina; Saavedra,Nora Katia; Varesche,Maria Bernadete Amâncio; Foresti,Eugenio.
In this work, the biological denitrification associated with anoxic oxidation of methane and the microbial diversity involved were studied. Kinetic tests for nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) removal and methane uptake were carried out in 100 mL batch reactors incubated in a shaker (40 rpm) at 30 ºC. Denitrificant/methanotrophic biomass was taken from a laboratory scale reactor fed with synthetic nitrified substrates (40 mgN L-1 of NO3- and subsequently NO2-) and methane as carbon source. Results obtained from nitrate removal followed a first order reaction, presenting a kinetic apparent constant (kNO3)) of 0.0577±0.0057d-1. Two notable points of the denitrification rate (0.12gNO3--N g-1 AVS d-1 and 0.07gNO3--N g-1 AVS d-1) were observed in the beginning...

Effects of trace volatile organic compounds on methane oxidation BABT
Chiemchaisri,Wilai; Visvanathan,Chettiyappan; Jy,Shing Wu.
The effects of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on methane oxidation in landfill cover soils were examined. The batch experiments were conducted using single and mixed VOCs, such as, dichloromethane (DCM), trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), and benzene. The results from all combinations showed a decrease in methane oxidation rate with increase in VOC concentrations. Moreover, inhibition effects of TCE and DCM were found higher than benzene and PCE. The reduction of methane oxidation by benzene and PCE could be attributed to the toxicity effect, whereas TCE and DCM were found to exhibit the competitive-inhibition effect. When the soil was mixed with DCM, no methane oxidation was found. Damage to the cell’s internal membrane was found in a...

Fluxo de gases-traco de efeito estufa na interface solo/atmosfera em solos de cerrado (2001). Infoteca-e
CARDOSO, A. N.; SAMINEZ, T. C.; VARGAS, M. A..

Microbial methane oxidation and sulfate reduction at cold seeps of the deep Eastern Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Omoregie, Enoma O.; Niemann, Helge; Mastalerz, Vincent; De Lange, Gert J.; Stadnitskaia, Alina; Mascle, Jean; Foucher, Jean-paul; Boetius, Antje.
The Eastern Mediterranean hosts a variety of active cold seep systems, such as gas chimneys, mud volcanoes and pockmarks, in water depths of 500 to 3200 m. As part of the NAUTINIL expedition in 2003, the sediments of cold seeps on the Nile Deep Sea Fan (NDSF) were sampled for the first time for biogeochemical and microbiological analyses. Here we compare rates of the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) and sulfate reduction (SR) as well as the microbial community structure of a variety of cold seep systems including mud volcanoes, pockmarks and brine seeps. Our results revealed strong differences in microbial activity among the different seep systems of the Eastern, Central and Western provinces of the NDSF, as well as the Olimpi field (Central...
